PERC increases efficiencies by passivating the backside of the solar cell. Thanks to this passivation, the light which reaches the backside without having produced any free charge carriers is reflected into the cell, where it gets a second chance to create electrical current. Mono-crystalline PERC cells reach an efficiency of > 21.5% which means an efficiency gain of ≥ 1% and an increase of module power by 15 W compared to standard cells.
Only two additional process steps
A PERC cell line is established by introducing only two additional process steps compared to a standard cell line. As the increased production costs are lower than the added value of the PERC cells and modules, the producers have a higher margin potential in the market and can still offer PV modules which give their customers reduced kWh costs.
Other backside passivation technologies
Apart from the industry-leading PERC technology, there exist other backside passivation technologies like PERT (Passivated Emitter Rear Totally Diffused) and PERL (Passivated Emitter Rear Locally Diffused) which will gain increasingly in importance in the future. Unfolding their full potential, PERx technologies will enable > 23% solar cell efficiency.
